Yes. That is what I did. Still cannot get them to work. Oddly, the pairing does t work and the backup plan is to “upgrade software on Apple TV” which , btw, you cannot do without a functioning remote!!!!!!

No iTunes anymore, can't even connect it to a MacBook. The iPhone tells me to type in a code. So how do I do that? This is really something Apple should stop doing - frustrating its customers! Utter waste of time just because Apple didn't want to put a physical button on the darn thing!

You don't, you need to locate or replace the remote.
The replacement remote, when pushing buttons, makes the Apple TV led flash yet it does control/communicate with the screen. How is this pairing done without a functioning remote?

I am having the same problem. Bought a new remote and cannot connect it to Apple TV. Is there no way to FORCE the TV to upgrade to a newer firmware without a silly remote? That's amazing!!!!
