You'll need to get with yahoo support. Yahoo mail/servers have been notoriously bad when using a third party app, which is why they push to use the yahoo app.

I've gone through the Yahoo set up routine on six different Macs. As long as I knew the password, and got a one time use code when required, they all were established with the first try.

That was starting with El Capitan in 2015 right through Ventura currently: 2015 27" iMac, 2015 21.5" iMac, 2016 MBP, 2020 MBP and a pair of 2020 27" iMacs

Catalina is a currently-supported version of MacOS. Your issues are NOT due to old macOS.

I set mine up again yesterday using MacOS 10.14 Mojave and again using 10.15 Catalina.

What sometimes can be problem is the account-name. In some cases, the entire string: yourname@yourISP is the required account_name when Yahoo, AOL or similar services are hosting emails for a different Internet Service Provider (ISP).
