Why can't we make an iphone backup to a lightning jump drive large enough?

How long until we can do a full iPhone backup to an attached jump drive, they are large enough and easy to store and restore from if the OS allows it.

Probably because it's a very bad idea to use a jump/thumb drive for backup or long term storage.

A thumb drive degrades slightly every time you write to it. Granted it may take hundreds or even thousands of write cycles to damage it but why chance it.

An SSD drive uses similar technology, however they have a lot of redundancy built in to allow for damaged memory.

not sure what a jump drive is but if it's anything like an usb stick or external hd using usb then you can suggest it to them using their feedback channel (though ios devices can't provide enough power out of it's connector to power external harddrives that rely on power from the host)

"Jump Drive" is just another name for "Flash Drive" – possibly a trademarked marketing name of a particular brand or brand line.

iphone will not let one draw any power from it's port, if the ssd drive would not be powerd by it's own ac source it would never be able to run

as stated

Agreed, external drive needs power, however small (my current ssk SSD drive works without extra power for those who might be interested), and the apple accessory that allows both powering and an external drive works from a lightning device works for the power side of the issue for those without compatible SSDs.

And thanks for the link....am new to the apple community, and now finding my way around the support posts. Appreciate the redirect.

Thanks both for the feedback.....I do understand apples does not allow what I would call a standalone backup to a device attached to my iphone 14 pro max, but I have several 1 Tbyte portable SSD drives that take very little power to run. I use them for file transfer from my iphone, but do not understand why that path is not open for backups. We have so many updates coming regularly, and while I am using my MacBookPro for other tasks, it would be nice to get a simple iphone backup. I was hoping someone would be aware of a possible path forward, and/or suggest it to the OS developers.
