why can't I preview a song without an Apple Music subscription

I don't want to subscribe to Apple Music and would just like to search, preview and buy songs like I have been doing for years. Every time I get close to finding a song and try to preview it I get a prompt to join Apple Music.

Thanks for the extra details! It sounds like you need to enable iTunes Store on Music. Try this:

  1. Open Music
  2. Click Music on the menu bar > Preferences > General > the box next to iTunes Store

Then, you can browse the iTunes Store by selecting it from the sidebar in Music, under 'Store'. :)

OK- I'm in the Apple Music app and click on the link for the iTunes Store. then I enter the name of the song I'm searching for. It takes me to the page "top results".I find the song and click on it to preview it and I continuously get the window "Get 1 month of iTunes free". I click on "Not Now". This continues forever.

What am I missing? Thanks in advance for your help.

Note that this is the Music for iOS forum. In case anyone reading this has an iPhone, and gets confused by the description of where things are on a Mac:

  • On a Mac, the iTunes Store is located within the iTunes application (pre-Catalina) or the Music application.
  • On an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, the iTunes Store has its own app, separate from the Music app.
