macOS13.6: I was told to read at Mac site about security keys. The page tells me nothing about what a security actually is. It mentions connections like USB-C, Lightning, etc. But why do I need a connection? Is a Security Key a physical device I must buy? Is it two passwords I must keep up w? What the heck is a Security Key, Apple?

The security keys they are talking about are things like the Yubikey
which may be obtained from many different retailers. There are other physical security key manufacturers.
In the 2 factor authentication world, the phrase used is “Something you know, and something you have”. Your password is something you know, and a device that generates a unique code that changes each time it is generated (time based algorithm) is something you have.
