Troubleshoot importing audiobook from CDs into Books

I'm trying to import my audiobook CDs into Books rather than repurchasing automatic downloads of the titles. I have imported my first book. It uses 34 CDs and is comprised of 363 total tracks. I have gone into iTunes to play with the metadata (under Get Info) to try to take "34 books" and turn them into THE one book. I have REPEATEDLY changed the metadata on each track, yet my end results are:

Disc 1 tracks automatically switch from:

Author: Robert Jordan

Title: The Shadow is Rising

Track info: chapter title info

Track: 1 of 363

Disc:

This is a compilation box checked

TO:

Author: Robert Jordan

Title: The Shadow is Rising [disc 1]

Track info: chapter title info

Track: 1 of 12

Disc: 1 of 34

No boxes checked

I have gone from 34 separate discs down to five separate folders. One folder is specifically disc 1, which refuses to maintain my metadata changes. One folder is 252 tracks, but not all of them are consecutive. Another folder is 96 tracks, again not all consecutive. One folder is a separate bonus interview. And another folder is random tracks and parts of chapters that have saved in this separate folder for no discernible reason.

For the love of all that is good and holy, how can I get all of these BLEEPING tracks to appear in ONE folder in order from track 1 of 363 to track 363 of 363, with all references to the discs they came from removed? Why are my changes to metadata within Get Info not saving? Please help save my sanity. And thank you.

FWIW I think the best course of action is simply to rip your audio CDS as is and not to try to play with metadata. When imported into its or Music, the matching service should find the details. I'd start there. My old audiobooks still reside in iTunes as I've not bothered with import into Books.
