There is some information on the Internet about Mac and 3Com EtherLink III / 3C589 series PCMCIA cards, but I have no idea whether the card in the picture is in any way similar (chipset). If you cannot find an appropriate driver, you could perhaps look for something like a Global Village or Farallon PCMCIA Ethernet card (may also be combined with a modem) with drivers compatible with your operating system.

If necessary, you could of course try an Orinoco Silver or Gold 802.11b wireless PCMCIA card instead (must be the early model with a thicker antenna). There was also a Dell variant of this card. The disadvantage is that the card can not use anything higher than WEP security. You would not want to use WEP with your normal Wi-Fi network, though. So, the logical approach is then to connect the card to a separate, old router only (which could be disconnected from the Internet and/or powered off when not in use).

Remember, it is an update, so Mac OS 8.5 or 8.5.1 would be needed to begin with.

You could install/copy the system and the update on/to an external Mac-formatted (Mac OS Extended = HFS+) SCSI hard drive or Mac-(re)formatted CompactFlash card in a PC Card adapter for CF connected to the PB 1400cs.

As you can see, the downloads are encoded MacBinary (.bin). As mentioned in an earlier reply, always keep the encoding intact until on the old Mac (PB 1400cs). Once there, use StuffIt Expander for the decoding. Drag the downloaded/transferred .bin files onto the StuffIt Expander program icon. Do not double-click on a .bin file that has been on a more modern computer (Mac or PC).

An smi file is a self-mounting image. In the case of multipart downloads, you would decode one .bin file containing the .smi and the other .bin files containing the parts. When decoded, place all these in one common folder. Double-click on the .smi to mount the entire image. If necessary, the entire mounted image can be copied to a Mac-formatted (Mac OS Extended = HFS+) hard disk or CompactFlash card.

Yes, you could try that. Reformat the CF card first. In principle, it should be possible to drag-copy just a (complete) System Folder, or the entire PB 1400cs hard disk content, to the CF card. After that, you may have to check whether it is possible to boot from the CF card. Then either the single (large, via the download button) 8.6 update .bin file or the twelve/sixteen (depending on language version) small multipart .bin files.

Thanks I thought that might be the case, It was curiosity really to see what is available..I know there are other sources of downloads on the internet I just like to keep things genuine, from their original source. I have managed to get a 32 gb memory upgrade so that will be another improvement when it arrives ..thanks again

Hello again,

An appropriate version of ClarisWorks/AppleWorks should be fine for word processsing.

Since browsers that work with Mac OS 8.6 are not compatible with modern (secure) web pages, everything will be limited (plain http). You could have a look at iCab, the text-only WannaBe, and possibly Classilla (although RAM insufficient; possibly via virtual memory).

Yes, you could do that (but do not expect it to be as fast as real RAM).

However, attempting to assign virtual memory to another disk (the CompactFlash card in the PC Card adapter for CF) when booting from a system on the internal IDE/ATA hard drive may/will result in a problem with the card adapter being ejected upon restart. Also, the internal hard drive may be slower than the CF card.

So, for Virtual Memory experiments, I suggest that you install an entire operating system (Mac OS 8.6?) on the CF card. When ready, select the CF card as the startup disk (the Startup Disk control panel). Restart. Launch the Memory control panel and choose an appropriate Virtual Memory size. Restart.
