Setting up a new password for a 2013 MacBook Air

In attempting to set up a new password for my daughter's computer, this problem is occuring.

I rebooted using Ctrl-R. I went to the macOS Recovery screen. After typing in the Apple ID and the password, the message "There was an error connecting the Apple ID server" appears. How do I fix this?

If it says that it can't connect the Apple ID server, follow the instructions here: If you can't connect to the App Store, iTunes Store, or other Apple services

Also, Apple ID passwords can be reset by going to https://iforgot.apple.com

If it's the login password, you will need to follow steps here: Reset your Mac login password You can select your macOS version at the top of the page.
