1st Gen Airpods won't stay connected

Just as the title says: I usually only wear one Airpod at work and switch them throughout the day (the charge-life is terrible - they only have about an hour, an hour and a half of charge life). Only the left Airpod will stay connected, or better, will give me sound. The right Airpod will be connected for a minute and then the sound cuts off. Unlike when the Airpod dies and the video stops playing, my right Airpod will cut off but the video keeps playing.

Things I have tried: I have disabled and reactivated the Bluetooth on my phone. I have disabled the automatic ear detection. The firmware for the Airpods is up to date. The Airpods charging case is next to my phone. I have updated my phone. The airpods case is next to my phone.

What else can I do?

Your First Generation AirPods are now about 5-6 years old, and the batteries are probably beyond their expected service life. Your description with short operating times and unplanned disconnections is also consistent with batteries which need to retire.

The batteries in AirPods are not really replaceable. Replacement individual components can be ordered through Apple's repair page AirPods Repair & Service - Apple Support but where you are looking at probably both AirPods and also the charging case it is probably more cost effective to consider purchasing completely new latest model, either AirPods 3rd Generation or AirPods Pro 2nd Generation which would also get you new warranty and support.
