Cannot log in to iMac. Password says it doesn't work and trying to log in with Apple ID I get the following after authentication: "the supplied iCloud account was unable to unlock this volume".

I have now tried at least twenty times to restart and re-enter my Apple ID and password to log into my iMac. I keeps giving me the same error. I have gone through the help boards here in Apple community and gone through hard restart, resetting apple id password, pretty much everything and nothing is working. I get a passcode request from another apple device, I enter it, and its says "recovering file vault key" and then immediately goes to "the supplied iCloud account was unable to unlock this volume." Any guidance is appreciated.

Filevault is something different than your macOS login. FileVault is the total encryption of your harddisk.

Try this to see if you can access your recovery key

  1. Power on your Mac, and wait at the login window for at least one minute.
  2. When a message appears at the bottom of the screen, press and hold the power button (or Touch ID) until your Mac shuts off. Then, press the power button (or Touch ID) again.
  3. Your Mac will start up to the Reset Password Assistant. Select "I forgot my password".

If you cannot access your recovery key, it could be that your harddisk has became inaccessible. Do you have a Time Machine backup from before you enabled FileVault?

I've gone through the forgot my password route. There are three options given, forgot password, password not working, and can't recall the third, but I've gone through each scenario and ended up with the same result. The computer used to belong to my daughter but I reset it to factory and set up my Apple ID in it. I've only used a handful of times since I have a Mac laptop I use most often. This is the first time its given this error. Sadly I don't have a backup of the FileVault. There isn't much to back up since all of my files are in iCloud so I haven't done one for this computer.

i hv similar issue. MBP is restarting and stopping at my user login screen. Loop continues with password punch.

Upon trying several ways, few diff screens I hv encountered. One of them is

The supplied iCloud account was unable to unlock this volume.

Why it happens so? And remedy?
