In Preview when reading a PDF, there is the view to show thumbnails as a panel on the left side of the screen.
The current page you're looking at is highlighted in this thumbnail view. However, the selection is very faint and hard to see. Is there a way to make the selected thumbnail look more obvious?
In Light appearance mode, you can only slightly darken that thumbnail selection border by visiting:
System Settings : Accessibility : Display : Increase Contrast (=⦿)
This will make things worse in Dark Appearance mode though.

Of course, the open source Skim v1.16.13 PDF reader team understands usability:

FWIW, it doesn't appear to be all that faint to me in your screen shot. Plus the page number is higlighted. But, there's no way to change it.
