I have 2 divices. IPAD and IPHONE. I have the phone and my husband in a nursing home has the IPAD. How can we facetime each other

How can I facetime my own devices? I have the phone and he has the IPAD both tied to the same number.

(Note, I suggest below making note of some Apple ID settings. If you need more advice PLEASE DO NOT post your real IDs or other personal data here in forum messages. Substitute a dummy ID if necessary so a message still makes sense.)

I think before making new IDs or other changes which might break what you already have, it would be a good idea to check what is already there.

  1. On your iPhone go to the Settings App.
  2. The first entry in the list of settings is Apple ID, which will usually show your name. Tap on your name
  3. The Apple ID page should appear. Below your name it will now have the email address which is your Apple ID.
  4. Make a note of that email address.
  5. Go back to the first page of Settings, and scroll down to find FaceTime.
  6. Tap the FaceTime entry and make a note what it says under You can be reached by FaceTime at:
  7. Go back up one level to the list of settings, and find Messages. Tap to open it and look for Send & Receive. Tap to open it, and note the addresses to receive or send iMessages. (Hopefully both Messages and FaceTime are the same and both use your Apple ID).

The check on the iPad is identical. If your iPhone and the iPad are setup with all different IDs then you don't need to make many changes. If both devices are using the same IDs then changes need to be made so you can communicate easily and reliably.

You would make a new/second Apple ID in much the same way as your original Apple ID was created. The general guide to this is in Apple's support document How to create a new Apple ID - Apple Support where you can select a detailed description with steps which are appropriate for the type of device you are using.

  • Once a new Apple ID has been created you would need to sign out (on one device only) and sign in on the new Apple ID. If you need guidance with this please see the support document sign in with a different Apple ID.

I am also aware you only have mentioned one device each. It would be a good plan to arrange backup communication (other family members?) simply so if anything goes wrong while making changes you can still get back to us here for advice. Another possible route for extra help and advice might be through your local Apple Store if it is within easy reach.

These are potentially big changes. If you are not sure please post back with any questions, get the plan clear in your mind before it gets chance to go wrong.
