Since you're coming from Mavericks (10.9), you might need to do something like upgrading to El Capitan (10.11) or Sierra (10.12) before then installing another upgrade to get to a later OS. I'm not clear on this, but I've seen where people have advised staged upgrades in other cases involving upgrades from very old versions of the OS, such as Snow Leopard (10.6) or Lion (10.7).
Before doing any upgrade, it would be a good idea to make at least one backup of your current system. Note that Mavericks is not available through the link above (for whatever reason).
Catalina and later will not run 32-bit applications, so if you upgrade to Big Sur, you might want to check what 32-bit applications you are using now before doing the upgrade. With a jump as large as that from Mavericks (10.9) to Big Sur (11.0) – a jump of 7 major OS versions – you may find that there are other compatibility issues besides just the 32-bit one.
However, Big Sur will run current applications (hopefully you have an 8 GB RAM variant of the MacBook Air), and even if you're running applications like FireFox, LibreOffice, GIMP, iTunes, etc., it's probably to the point that you want to be running at least High Sierra.

You can still play music, load music extracted from your CDs onto your iPhone/iPad/iPod, etc., so this is simply a heads-up to let you know not to panic if you upgrade to Big Sur and find it gone.
