Apple Watch Ultra failure

Has anyone dealt with an Ultra failing after a single swim? I’ve had the watch barely two months and went swimming with it for the first time today. VERY light duty- just about 30 minutes floating around a lazy River in a community pool. Initially, it did fine. (I thought it was cool that it automatically showed the water temperature.) For most of that time, it wasn’t even under the water and, when it was, it was submerged only about a foot. (So, basically, conditions no worse that what an original Series 1 should’ve been able to handle.)

About 30 minutes in, I noticed the screen was black. I wasn’t too worried at first, thinking maybe I hadn’t fully charged it the night before and the battery had simply run out. However, when I got home and placed it on the charger (that the watch came with) no lightning bolt symbol appeared— just a black screen.

I left it on the charger for two hours: no change. I tried a one button and two button restart- nothing. I’m at a loss. I’ve got an appointment with the Genius Bar for tomorrow but I’m concerned that if this is indeed water damage, they may refuse to cover the repair. Which would be beyond frustrating for an $800 watch that’s advertised as dive capable.

I’ve actually read that before. It states: “If you have Apple Watch Ultra, you can wear it during recreational scuba diving up to 40 metres (130 feet) and other activities such as swimming, showering and water skiing.*”

Clicking on the additional link (per the asterisk), you also find this:

Note: Apple Watch Ultra is designed to comply with EN 13319. Beyond 40 meters in depth, some functions may stop working or work intermittently.”

Between advertising it as a dive watch and those listed specifications, the watch is CLEARLY indicated for use during recreational swimming. In my case, it was barely submerged below a foot and for a minimal time at that. And this was my first use with it in water. (I’ve never even worn it in the shower.) It’s never been abused, dropped or even scratched.

If the Ultra is truly that fragile, Apple is doing its customer base a clear disservice by marketing it as a sporting/dive watch.

“Apple Watch Ultra 2 has a water resistance rating of 100 meters under ISO standard 22810. It may be used for recreational scuba diving (with compatible third-party app from the App Store) to 40 meters and high-speed water sports. Apple Watch Ultra 2 should not be used for diving below 40 meters. Water resistance is not a permanent condition and can diminish over time. For additional information see support.apple.com/en-us/HT205000. “

Warranty will vary with country. In USA Apple currently is king, in Europe you will get better luck with warranty.
