At first I thought maybe a still running process might be the cause, so I closed all open programs and web browser, but it did not matter, shut down the machine and re-booted, the same.
If anyone can help with this it would be very much appreciated.

Make sure nothing is connected to the computer except Apple made devices. Many devices are not aware of Apple's low power energy saver mode. If that's not possible, use Screen Saver instead of Energy Saver. The iMac not being run off battery is merely a convenience factor of quick waking and dark screen.

Have only one device connected - external drive (non Apple made) for the Time Machine
I tweaked my settings for energy saver and lock screen ... decided to forget about the Sleep Command.
