MacBook Pro 14 running Ventura empties trash slowly

I've owned every Mac made since 1990. Why is Ventura so slow at emptying the trash? I've restarted in safe mode - it always returns to the same hanging dialogue box. This is a new 14" M2. Nice computer. But this really annoys me. What has changed in the macOS that it takes this long?

I’ve also been seeing this issue. For others reading the thread, I’ve been able to narrow it down to specific scenarios:

  • Emptying large number of files on an APFS formatted volume
  • Emptying a small number of files but large file size on an APFS formatted volume

I think it has to do with how the metadata / directory data of the drive is stored in APFS vs HFS+.

Emptying the trash on HFS+ volumes continue to be speedy. For HFS+, size of a file doesn’t matter as much as the number of files (e.g. if you’ve got 100s of thousands then it’ll take time clearing it).

I close the box and the trash icon changes to empty.

Not sure what you mean when you say "close the box" but if you mean the Empty Trash dialog window, that will stay open forever until you either click the Empty Trash button or press the Return key.

You can disable the Empty Trash warning dialog in Finder > Settings… > Advanced.

It’s not the trash warning dialogue staying open, it’s the emptying trash progress dialogue and it just never progresses. But eventually, if you wait long enough and close it, the trash is in fact empty.

Thank you for the clarification

Can not reproduce this behaviour on 2 M1 and 1 M2 Apple computers

Though, I do not ever attempt to Muck Around on a Time Machine Backup drive in a effort to Delete Snap Shots

Above only applies if that is what is being done

If not, disregard

My solution is to not allow trash to accumulate. I have no need for trash so I empty the can often. Apparently this anomaly is predicated on how full the can gets. Or so it seems to me as the only instances of slow emptying is when I've deleted mega amounts of data. In that case, I just go about my business and let it empty.
