Cannot pair apple watch to iphone

I bought an apple watch from somebody and it cannot be paired to my iphone due to no connectivity to the internet for an update. However as you can see from the pict below i’m connected to my wifi+4bars. I have tried to turn on/off my phone and watch but it didn’t work. I have also tried to reset (by push & hold the digital crown)it but it keeps ending at the same loop, asking for an update but can’t update. I asked the previous owner if it’s still paired with their phone but they said no. I also tried reseting network settings (as advised by apple advisor through chat support).

my iphone is 14 pro, with an updated ios 16.5.1. The apple watch that i bought is a series 5, i have no idea how to check the watch ios cause it’s in a loop of demanding to pair with an iphone. However i’m guessing it’s not updated cause the previous owner haven’t used it in a while.

So to the apple community please give me your advice.

side note:the ios screenshot was taken recently, but it was updated a few days ago(? Can’t remember when), so please don’t get confused why the ios screenshot is earlier than the the root of my problem…

Hey! Try to ask whoever sold it to you to remove it from their list of devices. They need to disassociate it from their apple ID. It needs to no longer show up as one of their devices in "find my" ... once they've done that then if the device isn't broken you should be able to get it connected.

Hello ulfa23,

If you're unable to update your Apple Watch, let's restart the iPhone and the Apple Watch one after the other. Leave them powered off until both devices have been powered off.

Restart your iPhone - Apple Support

Restart your Apple Watch - Apple Support

Once you've done that, please attempt to update the Apple Watch again. If you encounter the same error, try updating using a different Wi-Fi network if possible. These steps will help us to further isolate this and may help to ultimately resolve this.

If it's still unable to update after trying those steps, you'll want to contact Apple to report the issue: Get Support

Cheers!

If you're experiencing difficulties pairing your Apple Watch to your iPhone and it's requesting an update without being able to connect to the internet, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

1. Check Wi-Fi connectivity: Although your iPhone is showing a strong Wi-Fi signal, it's possible that there might be an issue with the internet connection itself. Try disconnecting and reconnecting to the Wi-Fi network on both your iPhone and Apple Watch. You can do this by going to the Settings app on each device, selecting Wi-Fi, and toggling the switch off and then back on. Make sure you enter the correct Wi-Fi password if prompted.

2. Restart both devices: Turn off both your iPhone and Apple Watch, then turn them back on again. This can help refresh the system and clear any temporary issues that may be causing the problem.

3. Reset network settings: On your iPhone, go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This will remove saved Wi-Fi networks and their passwords, so make sure you have those details available. After the reset, reconnect to your Wi-Fi network and try pairing your Apple Watch again.

4. Update iPhone software: Check if there are any software updates available for your iPhone. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. If an update is available, download and install it. Keeping your iPhone up to date can ensure compatibility with other Apple devices.

5. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled: On your iPhone, go to Settings > Bluetooth and make sure it is turned on. Bluetooth is necessary for the initial pairing process between your iPhone and Apple Watch.
