After about a minute, the screen dims. Is there a way to delay this? The replies I see on this are mentioning energy saver in system preferences. I don't have that.

Yes, I don't have Energy Saver there. For me, its Wallpaper, Screen Saver, Battery.
Under battery I don't see a screen setting.
I haven't installed any such programs. Its a new laptop.
For me I didn't want the display to dim when on Battery or after the screen had powered off and back on. This option under Displays/Advanced and then turning off "Slightly dim the display when on battery"
Are you saying you don't have Energy Saver in the sidebar of System Settings? Like this:
