Time machine backup fails, backup disk is read only

My backups using a WD My Passport 1TB disk fails to backup because the drive is "read only". I don't understand how the back up disk became read only. Is this telling me the disk is full or possibly corrupted? WD First Aid was unable to repair the disk but it passes the WD Drive Utitilies drive status check & Quick Drive Test . The Complete Drive Test cancels at 10% repeatedly.

I reformatted the disk, disconnected the drive then rebooted the Mac.....rebooted again with the drive connected, then reconfigured Time Machine & it started working normally. I had to delete the disk in TM settings because it was still showing the disk as before. What had me confused was that my "Macintosh HD - Data drive was listed as not to be backed up. Maybe if I had deleted that TM would have functioned normally but reformatting the disk is probably a good thing after 7 years of use. Thanks for the assistance!
