Photos App stuck in a loop gathering favourites/analyzing scenes etc of photos in app on icloud - do I wait for it to complete before importing Iphoto library?

I've read a couple of answers from @leonie to a similar question saying that this process will complete eventually. I have an old macbook pro (2012)now running Catalina (the most recent OS it can run).

Catalina has just been installed at the genius bar to allow me to connect to the cloud and use the Photos app rather than iphoto.

Photos app is running and has updated all the photos that were in the cloud already (21000+) but is now stuck in the loop mentioned by other users.

I want to import and upgrade my old iphoto library which is of a similar size and currently not in the cloud. My question is do I wait and let it finish sorting out what's in the cloud already completely or can I start the import and then let it run the analysis on the whole lot?

Poor little mac is doing it's best!

Hello DianeEG,

Photos is designed to scan your library in the background so that it can prepare Memories and other features for you. You should be OK to import your others photos into your library without issue, it will add those to the queue for scanning and may take a little longer.

If it's still stuck scanning, you can try to repair your library in Photos with these instructions.

1. If the Photos app on your Mac is open, choose Photos > Quit Photos.
2. Press Option-Command and double-click the Photos icon in the Applications folder (or click the Photos icon in the Dock).
3. In the Repair Library window, click Repair to rebuild your photo library.

Repair your library in Photos on Mac

Your memories are important! To be safe, make sure that you have both Photos libraries backed up before you start importing or repairing. Back up the library in Photos on Mac will walk you through different options for creating your backup.

Regards.
