Accessory uses to much power - iPad

I bought a Kingston card reader (FCR-HS219/1) together with a lightening camera adapter for USB3.

This used to work OK but now reports “accessory uses too much power” when plugged in to the iPad Pro.

Is this problem in any way connected to the upgrades to the iOS? (V16.5)

I’ve noticed battery drain has become an issue since recent upgrades were installed so curious if this anecdotal observation has any connection to my problem.

This sucks as an issue because I have no way now to read the SD card from my camera.

Pls help…

As you are doubtless aware, many USB devices require more power that the iPad’s Lightning port can alone provide - and as such, when using the Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter, you must connect a Power Adapter to the pass-through Lighting connector of the Camera Adapter.

Subsequent to the iOS/iPadOS 16.5 update, there is an issue with charging the iPad from USB Type-A Power Adapters, via the Lightning to USB3 Camera Adapter - regardless of the Power Adapter’s power output.

The current workaround, pending a software update to fix the issue, is to use an Apple 20W (or greater) USB-C Power Adapter with a USB-C to Lightning charging cable.

Unexpected bugs can and do occur - even with Apple.

Apple are reportedly aware of the issue and are understood to be preparing a fix. Hopefully there will soon be a system software update that addresses the issue.

In the meantime, with the described workaround, the Camera Adapter is fully usable with iPad/iPhone and connected USB devices.

I can confirm that the issue exists with both iOS 16.5 (iPhone) and iPadOS 16.5 (iPad) - and can similarly confirm efficacy of the workaround. I actually had to find an older USB Type-A Power Adapter to validate the bug - as all Power Adapters that I regularly use are USB-C (supporting USB PD - Power Delivery). As such, I had not encountered the bug until an older Power Adapter was used.

For information, USB Type-A Power Adapters have been deprecated by Apple and most manufacturers. USB-C is now a mandated connection standard in many regions/countries - such as all EU Member States.

To use the 20W USB-C Power Adapter, you’ll also require a USB-C to Lightning cable:

  • USB-C to Lightning Cable (1m)

Again, for absolute clarity, the described workaround requires an Apple 20W (or greater) USB-C Power Adapter. Other USB-C Power Adapters may also work - but they must support the USB PD (Power Delivery) standard.

What you describe in the first paragraph of your response is precisely how I have been using the accessory. It was working fine with the power adapter connected to the camera adapter.

Now I get the dialogue box which states the accessory uses too much power.

Your second paragraph seems to explain this and I observe the iPad does not charge when accessory is connected. Even when fully charged, the same situation arises.

Apple software releases used to be reliable but what I now observe is a trend for bugs to be introduced more frequently!!
