Unpair white Apple Remote Control from Late 2014 Mac mini running macOS 12 (Monterey)

I inherited a Late 2014 Mac mini which is running macOS Monterey (latest updates). It included a white Apple Remote Control which is currently paired with the mini. I want to unpair it but none of the instructions work (pressing buttons on the remote nor disabling it in System Preferences).

What options do I have?

Thank you,

Bruce

Is the battery in the remote working?

I took these pix of how to remove the battery from the A1156 remote:

1) Use something pointy to depress the tiny button on the remote's base:

2) The base will pop up slightly:

3) The tray slides out. ⚠️ NOTE the polarity if you need to change batteries.

4) The tray is asymmetrical so you cannot reinstall it incorrectly. Handy.
