MacOS allows direct font installation just like Windows, it's only iOS which is more complicated. To ask Apple to make it easier, you can use

You’ll not be able to install fonts from a file or downloaded zip-archive. Instead, iOS/iPadOS fonts are installed from third-party Apps downloaded from the Apple App Store.

Many fonts are licensed - and as such require payment of a fee. Others are royalty free - and can be downloaded and installed without payment for their use. That said, many font-installer Apps may be a paid-App in their own right.

There are also Apps that include a font-installer - one being Adobe Creative Cloud:

This App allows you to install and use many Adobe and royalty-free fonts without charge; you simply need to have a free Adobe account - and be signed-in to your account to install fonts. The font-installation may need to be occasionally refreshed, but this is minor inconvenience for the benefit gained.

A popular (low-cost) third-party font installer App, often recommended within the Apple Support Community, is AnyFont:

You should be aware that while installed fonts are usable with many productivity Apps, this feature is by no means universal; Apps themselves must support installed fonts.

I have not seen any indication of that myself. Could you provide details? I use AnyFont.

Note that user installed fonts have always only been usable in apps with a font menu, like Pages, and even then some 3rd party apps would not accept them.

To reiterate - while the iOS/iPadOS system architecture doesn’t support ad-hoc installation of fonts, some fonts can be installed, using a third-party App, for free.

It is super unfortunate that a third party app (and configuration profile) is required to install fonts. TTF and OTF are open formats and there's no legitimate reason not to allow users to install them. There's most likely a profit motive, which hurts users for Apple's (and others') bottom line, and fits the definition of "unfortunate".

This is Apple. Years ago I bought the i font App in the App Store to install a font which is super important for my work on an iPad 4 - worked flawless. Now on my new iPad-Pro it seems that installing any ttf font is restricted. There are more and more restrictions and illogical user interface guidance. It’s very frustrating to use my new iPad.
