I'm trying to transfer photos to my PC, and it starts (says it will take 8 minutes) and then goes for about 2 minutes and suddenly stops. No error message or anything. Just stopped, and of course only a few files transferred.

Thanks. This partially works also. It transfers about half of the photos and then I get a message that my device is unreachable. I tried unplugging and plugging back in, which resets everything; and I can get halfway through downloading the pictures.
Is there a way to keep my phone from disconnecting from my PC?
one step ( that tried so far) is to keep the screen of the iphone actice during transfer. It works for me fine and all transfers finished. When i left screen locked all transfers interrupted with "unreachable device" message. Its funny that this disconnection issue relates to iphone device and there is no reply from apple regarding the problem. I guess that iTunes might be the only solution-can i transfer photos to PC through iTunes?
