Otherwise, maybe consider handing your device in a professional shop for cleaning, often times it its the dust and debris build up in the machines which then, coupled with a degrading thermal paste, lead to overheating devices.

You can see what programs are currently running by launching the Activity Monitor application that comes installed on every Mac.

Another thing to consider. Do you have the MBP on a flat, hard surface? If you have it on something soft, like a blanket or even your lap, you may be interfering with its ability to disapate heat through the casing.
