iPhone Calendar contains duplicate and old entries after updating Mac to Ventura
I recently updated my iMac (27-inch 2020) to Ventura and am currently up to date with Ventura 13.4. My iPhone is a 14 Pro. After the Ventura update, when I first manually synched my iMac/iPhone, the Calendar entries got all screwed up on the iMac: looooots of duplicate entries. So I spent a few hours on the iMac manually deleting all the duplicates (from 2028 to present...yep...I really rely on Calendar and it's important to me to have the same info on my Mac and iPhone). Then I tried a synch from my Mac to my phone, with the "Replace Calendars" box checked so, "During the next sync, information on this iPhone will be replaced with information from this Mac" would be honored. That process is not working properly. While my iMac Calendar still looks good, the iPhone has random duplicate entries, and old entries that have previously been deleted on the Mac.
I do not use iCloud.
I have tried various things, none of which have worked, including:
- deleting all the Calendars inside the Calendar app on the iPhone, and then synching again
- updating my iPhone iOS to 16.5
- deleting and restoring the Calendar app on the iPhone
- confirmed I am indeed not using iCloud
- just in case it helped, I did temporarily turn iCloud on, via the web interface, and deleted any entries that were there in Calendar (there was ancient stuff; I deleted everything except the US Holidays and Birthdays calendars); turned iCloud back off
I'm scared to do a synch without checking that box every time, to make sure the iMac is overriding the iPhone, lest everything get screwed up on my iMac again. (That box is un-checked by default, and I find I have to rush to check it again right after starting a synch, even when I do start out with it checked, because it unchecks itself.) But no matter how many times I repeat the process, it does not work correctly.
Before trying all of these things again today, on the iMac, in Calendar, I did File > Export > Calendar Archive, so I do have a file with the .icbu suffix, which I HOPE would restore my iMac calendar to its current state if I do accidentally mess it up again. But meanwhile, I need to get the correct Calendar info onto my iPhone. (BTW I don't see any way to use that exported archive file from the iMac for getting the data onto the iPhone.)
This garbled Calendar scenario has happened to me multiple times over the years. There has never been a clear reason as to why, or a pattern that indicates what I should do to correct it, since each time seems different. Every time it does happen (maybe once every couple of years) I swear I will not go through the torture of troubleshooting and rectifying the situation again, but I really rely on Calendar, so it's worth it to me to get it fixed. REALLY hoping for some tip that will salvage this situation. Thank you in advance to anyone who can offer any useful advice.
