Contacts deleted using family Apple id

I set my son up a new Apple ID, signed in on my old iPhone 11, his account it sits under my family on settings.

When I deleted contacts off my old iPhone 11, it also deleted my contacts off my iPhone 14.

can anyone explain to me why this happened and whether I can recover them?

I’m so annoyed! That’s hundreds of contacts I know will need to add again.

I do not understand when we have two separate Apple ID with different email addresses. The only thing linking us is because he’s under my family so I can set parental controls.

Hello Ranneburton,

Thanks for choosing the Apple Support Communities. We see you signed out of your Apple ID and into another, then deleted contacts and lost them on your iPhone 14.

This may have happened due to your iCloud account still being active and signed in on the iPhone 11. When switching to a new iPhone, you would want to follow this resource when giving away your old one: What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

You may be able to retrieve your Contacts by following these steps: Restore contacts stored in iCloud on iCloud.com - Apple Support

"You can restore your contacts from an earlier version that was automatically archived in iCloud. For example, you might want to restore an earlier version of your contacts to recover some that were accidentally deleted.

When you restore an earlier version, your current version is first archived in iCloud, so if you change your mind, you can go back to it.

  1. On iCloud.com, click the App Launcher button in the toolbar, then click Data Recovery.
  2. Click Restore Contacts.
  3. Available versions are listed by the date and time they were archived.
  4. Tip: If you recently deleted a contact either from iCloud.com or your device that you now want to restore, it may take up to 24 hours for the archive to appear.
  5. To the right of the version you want to restore, click Restore.
  6. There may be more versions than can be displayed. Scroll to see them all.
  7. Note: Wait until iCloud finishes restoring your contacts before you change them. During the restore process, any changes you make aren’t saved.

The restored contacts and contact groups appear on all your devices that have Contacts turned on in iCloud settings."

We hope this helps.

Cheers!
