Technically, you need a hardware update for iOS 15, if you’re on an iPhone 6 or earlier.

Not software.

iPhone 6 is supported on iOS 12 and no later. That’s iOS 12.5.7, currently.

You’ll need a newer or new iPhone, and any recent iPhone will be substantially more capable than an iPhone 6.

Updating an iPhone 6 Past iOS 12:

A. You can't.  The iPhone 6 will only install to iOS 12. See here: Update your iPhone or iPad Software if you're Experiencing Issues with Location, Date, and Time - Apple Support. And, for the note, even if you could update, only the latest version will install: iOS 16.

The iPhone 6 cannot be updated to iOS 13, 14, 15 or 16.

It's too old for any new updates.
