Is iMessage free internationally if it is iPhone to iPhone? I texted a friend in Switzerland from US and I was never charged

iMessage is free, always. Wether local or international it does not matter as its sent over the internet, like email. Its also only between Apple devices. You cannot use iMessage with android devices.
SMS messages that are used between iPhone and Android devices are controlled by your cellular service provider and can incur in extra charges for international messaging depending on your cellular service plan and provider.
