QuickTime won’t open files copied to external drive

Recently when I copy files from my Mac to an external hard drive and I want to view the file on the external drive it says quick time doesn’t support the file type and won’t open it.

if I drag the file from the external back to the desktop it gives the same error message. I tried to duplicate the file and copy it to the external and still the same problem. Strange that a few months ago I had no problems copying video files from my laptop to the external drive and those files still work and can be opened in my external but now anything I copy no matter what file format, won’t open at all.

I have no idea to be honest. I jist bought an external drive and plugged it in. Copied video files no problem. Then just recently when I went to back up more video files so I could free up my computer o noticed that it just wouldn’t work once copied to external giving the “file is not compatible with QuickTime” error. When I copied it back to the max it was corrupted. This happens with word files as well as mp4 and .mov. Yet there are files I have in the external that I copied last year that still work fine. I’ve recorded them the same way as I always have.

the only thing I’ve added to my Mac recently is a second monitor. But I don’t always plug it in and have recorded without it plugged in.
