grey box "to" in Ventura Mac mail subject line

I recently noticed that for some but not all of my incoming emails there is the word "To" in a grey box to the left of the subject line. I really need to get rid of it as it is superfluous and distracting.

can you tell me how to get rid of it?

Found it should anyone need to know. In View menu de-select 'show to/cc label'. I think the idea is that it shows at a glance whether you are the primary 'to' recipient or a cc'd recipient. Bit of an odd one I must say.

I have just started experiencing the same issue using Sonoma. Looking at other threads, this seems to be a rare but persistent issue since 2009! I have gone through all settings and cannot find what is causing this.

It only appears when looking at a list of summary emails - one example below:

When you open the email up the 'to' is not there.
