POOR TEXT AND SCALING QUALITY WHEN USING EXTERNAL QHD MONITORS

HI , I just bought a Dell U2722DC QHD monitor to use with my MacBook Air 2020 M1, macOS 13.3.1(a).

I am using USB-C Apple thunderbolt cable. In setting it uses Default 2560x1440. but the Text Image is Terrible , blurry and not sharp at all. When I use the 1280 x 720 option the Scaling is large text and font , and all apps just scale badly but the Text is much smoother and sharper. I have done some research , and installed BetterDisplay and a few other third party apps, BUT even when using those settings , "HiDPI" the text image is still not that good and sharp/smooth? why is this I understand the whole Apple retina display issue!!!! However what is the point then , when a apple user wants to use an external monitor with a MacBook??????? please advise how to overcome this issue!

Hi this does not help me ,

my QHD monitor is Native 2560 x 1440 at 110ppi

the MacBook M1 has a Retina display a native 2560 x 1600 at 227ppi

I need a Scaled Display Resolution option of 1650 x 1050 “HIDPI”, and there is no such option.

how can this be created ?

Hello alain217,

If you have the "Scaled" option enabled that may be the cause of the clarity issue. According to the user guide for Dell monitors, they state to make sure the display resolution is set to Default and not Scaled.

Fuzzy or blurry image:
Ensure that the Display Resolution in System Preferences is set to Default and not Scaled.

You also mentioned some software you installed for the monitor, but did you install the actual Dell Display Manager for it? That software includes drivers for the display so if the display is using a resolution that a Mac doesn't natively include, it may add the option for that specific display resolution.

Dell Display Manager

Hi alain217,

We recommend that you try the steps here: If your external display is dark or low resolution - Apple Support

To perform the steps in the article we suggested above, click and open the link, read the subheadings below, and try each step.

1) Check cables and connections
2) Find out what your Mac supports
3) Detect your display
4) Allow your display to connect
5) Check display brightness
6) Update software

We recommend the steps above because they will show you what to do if your external display has a low resolution.
