Retrieving deleted messages from iPhone 12

I have followed the instructions for retrieving deleted messages, but when I tap on "Edit" in the top left corner of the messages screen I am not being given the "Show deleted messages" button. How can I retrieve my messages? NB I do not have filtering on.
