Why is my Apple Pencil not charging past 0%?

Im having the same experience with my 1st gen. I have been plugging it in and it’s stuck at 1% while i was charging it. Seconds after it shows that its at 100% after being inserted for 90 seconds. I unplug it and its still at 0%. Ive had this pencil for almost a year and i researched that these things last for years, but mine only lasted 10 months💀

Something i still haven't heard and i can't understand why its not a bigger issue is the fact that a new apple pencil at the store or any retailer might very well lay around for a couple pf months before someone purchases it. So many pencils would be dead or dying by the time someone takes them home. I dont get it.

Just to hopefully help anyone else going down this rabbit hole like I did... I had the same problem – I left the pencil (2nd gen) uncharged for several months and when snapping it to my iPad, it would register the pencil, but say 0%.

I tried everything I could find in every thread on the issue – reseting the bluetooth connection, hard resetting the iPad, etc. Nothing worked.

I read that the small battery in the pencil completely dies beyond recovery when leaving it uncharged for too long. I was feeling mucho dismay and planning a burial of my once-neglected pencil.

And yet WAIT, that once-dead pencil is now working... I'm honestly not sure what did the trick, but the only thing I did between it once staying 0% and it suddenly resurrecting from the deathly graves is the following:

1. I released then snapped it back to my iPad several times over and over for a couple minutes.
2. I then left it snapped onto my iPad with my iPad plugged into a charger overnight
3. The next morning I repeated the snap on and off procedure for a couple more minutes.
4. I came back to it some time later in the day and it had risen from the dead and worked perfectly

Apple Pencil won’t charge.

I am a student and today I bought an new iPad Pro with Apple Pencil 2 but not charging iPad saying the device charging and connecting but still 0% after hours

same Thing happened to me I heated the Pencil up and restarted my iPad switched Bluetooth on and off this can happen when you haven’t used it for a while so it’s almost completely dead with heat you can try charging it but don’t forget to plug it in every now and then

The hard reset of my iPad Pro while the pencil was connected worked like a charm. It began rechanging normally. I thought I was stuck buying a new iPencil due to a long period of no use (1 year). Thanks!

I first unpaired and clicked on forget this device. Just turning my IPad off and on while the pencil was plugged in worked for me. After turning it on it asked it I want to pair my apple pencil. Cheers.

The heat trick worked for me too! Literally rolled the pencil on a hot water bottle for less than 3 minutes (with the bottle wrapped in a cloth). The pencil immediately reconnected and showed 100% batter charge. Works fine. So happy.

For me it was sufficient to remove the case and charge the Pencil directly against the iPad (I also plugged in the iPad but not sure if that made a difference). It started charging quickly after that.

I got all depressed reading the doom and gloom posts suggesting that the battery must be dead after perhaps 2 years of non-use but after I followed the tip about powering off the iPad the pencil is recharging.

Hi I couldn’t find the hard reset which you said described here. I have same problem. Can you tell me please ?

Are you using the iPad to charge it, or the cable?

The hard reset worked for me too. I had to do the reset on the iPad though while the pencil icon was still on the screen. It didn’t work if I just attached the pencil and hard restarted the iPad.
