Locked files on my desk top

I have files on my desk top containing photos which open in thumbnails only. I can not open each individual photo, Why?

Is there any chance your Desktop files are backing up to iCloud? Check your left sidebar, and verify Desktop is on your Mac, and not on iCloud. If it is on iCloud, you need to change your settings.

If Time Machine is running it may lock files from time to time as it backs things up.

Use command-Tab to verify no other apps are open that might be accessing the files.

If any photos are being used for desktop images, or you are using your desktop folder for a slideshow screen saver, that could lock your files as well.
