Successfully Updating an iPhone:

A. Troubleshooting an Update not Responding:

B. Update Using a Computer:

In case anything freezes again just do this: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button hold the power button until the Apple logo show up then release. If your iPhone won't turn on or is frozen - Apple Support

Actually DO NOT DO THIS if you are updating iOS. It will interrupt the update, requiring deletion of the partial update and starting over.

Oops! I’m so sorry I never knew that would happen. I’m not anywhere close to a professional I just try to help with problems I think I know the answer to. I will be way more careful from now on.

Keep the phone as close to the Wi-Fi router as possible until the download is done.

A force restart will fix many problems, but when an update pauses there are other things to check first.
