Unable to load audio driver - Cubase 12

Hello. I have a 16" 2019 Macbook pro running Ventura with 2.3 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 running Ventura 13.3.1

When running loading large cubase 12 projects the software tells me that it cannot load the audio driver. This can be built-in internal audio driver in my mac, or one of two other audio drivers (focusrite-USB or allen and heath-Firewire).

When this happens I am unable to a) use cubase b) play any other sound on my mac (e.g., youtube gives audio render error, apple music just makes no sound, VLC the same, soundcloud just won't load the page, the spotify app says it's unable to play).

I've been in contact with cubase now and after trying a number of things they told me to contact the audio device hardware manufacturers. They also told me that there is an issue with the audio driver in the Ventura OS.

This does not happen with all cubase projects, only ones which use a significant amount of processing power/memory. I think I have the latest drivers for everything. This has been happening for about 6 months now.

If anyone has any ideas of how I can solve it I'd be very grateful. Are there log files for the apple audio driver which I might be able to look at to see why this is happening?

Thank you.

Hey hamish282,

Since the app can’t seem to access the driver, we had look at Steinberg’s Support site to see if there’s an updated driver available and located this: macOS: Audio interface not working properly/not accessible - Steinberg Support

If it’s still not working as it should, please contact Steinberg Support:

In the US: Steinberg USA support contact

Outside the US: Contact support

All the best.

Thank you very much for your response! Unfortunately however, Steinberg had already linked me to this page, but erroneously as the Yamaha USB driver is for silicon-based macs, not intel. Mine is an intel processor so I don't think it's applicable to me.

Steinberg told me to contact audio device driver manufacturers. I don't think this can be from the audio driver manufacturers, because it happens on every soundcard I plug in regardless of the manufacturer. I had a project yesterday which has slowly been growing and growing as I work on it. Today it suddenly has this problem and will no longer work with my audio drivers. It's like the project suddenly becomes corrupted at a certain point.

I think it might be the way my laptop behaves and interacts with cubase when it gets used to it maximum capability. I'm going to try and free loads of storage space as I only have 70GB remaining on my 1TB hdd which is apparently too little. Focusrite have provided some other information on how to optimise macs for audio use and they seem really helpful. I'll update if I find the problem!

Thanks a lot
