400gb of pictures on 256gb iPhone

Hi, so my iPhone has 256gb of storage and three days ago I went to check up on my memory status and I saw that i have 401gb of pictures and I dont understand how is that possible. Did anyone else have that problem? And does anybody have a solution? Is that a virus? Btw my iPhone is not jailbroken or anything like that.

It is not possible; there is data corruption on your phone. You should back it up to your computer or iCloud, then restore the backup. Restore your iOS device from a backup - Apple Support

Do you sync photos to iCloud? If you do, go to Settings/[your name]/iCloud and see how much space the photos take up in iCloud. If you have Optimize Storage enabled for Photos the iCloud size might be larger than the on-phone size.

I had this issue but with a newer iPhone (14 pro). Found out it was because I had too many HDR Videos (those videos which instantly brighten your phone screen upon watching).

Turns out those videos are extremely storage heavy, 1min of HDR footage can be up to 1GB! Anyone with a bunch of such videos in a newer iPhone should try and delete/transfer those videos to remove space from iPhone.

Also, if you're planning to take more videos, go to settings and reduce the iPhone's video recording quality and turn off any HDR Pro format options.

Hope this helps :)

Hi!

It is strange that your iPhone shows more used storage space than its capacity. It could be a display error. Have you tried restarting your iPhone and checking memory status again? To do so:

iPhone 8 and following:

Quickly press and release the Volume Up button

Quickly press and release the Volume down button

Long press the side button (power) until the Apple logo appears

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus:

Press the Volume down button and the Side (Power) button simultaneously with a long press until the Apple logo appears

iPhone 6s and following:

Long press the side (power) button and the Home button simultaneously until the Apple logo appears

If the problem persists, you might try to make a backup of your photos and restore your iPhone to see if the problem is not solved. To do this open Settings, press on Your Name, then on "iCloud", then on "Photos" and activate the option "ICloud Photo Library".

Then reset the iPhone.

I hope I helped you!
