RAM upgrade for IMac Retina 4k 21.5 (2019)

My hard drive is running incredibly slow. As per other posts I'm now considering getting an external SDD. Should I also upgrade the RAM from 8 to 16 or won't it make a difference if running from an external SDD?

Hi there!

8 GB of memory is sufficient for most Mac users.

An external SSD is what will help performance the most.
