iPad sees LG TV, but Airplay won’t connect

Anyone else having this problem? “Unable to connect to LG TV”. All software is up to date on both systems. Wi-Fi connections are good. iPad “sees” TV, but doesn’t connect. This is a new problem.

iPad Pro, 16

Are you certain that your TV supports AirPlay/AirPlay2?

If the TV does support AirPlay (and is set-up correctly), should you continue to experience difficulties, your WiFi Router may be unexpectedly failing to pass Apple Bonjour traffic on you local network - or your WiFi Router or Network Switch may be blocking this (or other) device discovery protocol(s).

This can occur for a number of reasons. Ensure that your TV and iPad are using the same WiFi network - and that wired and wireless network segments are part of the same IP-subnet, are not defined as separate VLANs - or that one or other are defined as “guest” networks, or placed in a DMZ. You may find that your router has a setting that limits/restricts broadcast and network discovery traffic; by example, if your Router has an IGMP Snooping setting, try toggling this or similar settings. Your Router WiFi settings may also have privacy settings that isolate WiFi clients from each other; if present, ensure these settings are disabled.

The Apple Bonjour protocol uses mDNS (Multicast DNS) UDP port 5353.

You may find that restart of your network components will resolve the problem. You’ll need to restart your network devices in the correct order. Assuming that you WiFi Router provides DNS services for your network, restart devices in this order - allowing time for devices to fully boot/restart prior to restarting other devices:

  • WiFi Router
  • Upstream wired Network Switch(es)
  • WiFi Access Points / Network Extenders
  • Other fixed infrastructure devices - such as Printers
  • Client devices

Restarting your iPad, after restarting other devices in the correct sequence, is most simply achieved by a forced-restart of the iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.

  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

If you continue to have difficulties, check to see if your iPad is using the new WiFi Private Address feature. This feature is intended to provide additional privacy and security when using “public” (untrusted) WiFi networks.

Settings > WiFi > [Your WiFi Network / SSID] - tap the “i” icon - Private Address

The Private Address feature is largely unnecessary for your home WiFi network; if enabled, Private Addressing can interfere with anticipated operation of other devices, such as AirPrint/Airplay. In such circumstances, you may need to disable this feature - and can be enabled or disabled for each individual network.

Yes there are concurrent 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands. I see no way to disable one. In the Spectrum App., I see it has a single Public IPv4 address. There is a DNS server set up at factory settings too. Standard WPA2 security. There in an UPnP setting which I have turned on. (That didn’t fix it)

Airplay has worked well in the past, but not anymore.

I see that there is a Security Shield Feature for 24/7 threat monitoring. I’ll toggle it off and let you know if that fixes it.

If AirPlay works when temporary changing the MAC Address of your iPad - even if only temporarily - this demonstrates that the problem is network related. As such, it is 99% certain that the issue lies with your WiFi Router - and not your iPad or TV.

mDNS/Bonjour network traffic is being filtered/dropped. If you haven’t done so already, try exploring your Router settings as previously described. If using WiFi network extenders, turn them off.

If your WiFi network is currently dual-band (i.e., the same SSID is being used for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks, you might also try splitting the networks (two different SSIDs) or disabling one of the bands altogether.

For me this solution has worked, I rebooted everything as advised. Now from two iPad pros, both with iOS 16.4.1 Airplay is working again to my LG (OLED55E9PLA).

Before ISP maintenance Airplay was working really well, but immediately after that, this wasn’t working any longer. Also screen mirroring was out btw. Chromecast was not affected.

Thanks a lot, fixed just in time for the next F1 race cast in Azerbaidjan. 👍🏻

I’m delighted that the guidance worked for you. Enjoy the F1 round two Grand Prix.
