Music application for iPhone 14 Plus stops playing music after 1-2 songs

I just switched from iPhone 7 Plus to iPhone 14 Plus. I moved all of my local mp3 files from the old phone to the new phone. I have 15,000+ songs (90 GB). My new phone is running iOS 16.4. I use iTunes on my PC to manage my music and playlists.

Everything was working fine on the iPhone 7 for years. But now, when I go to iPhone 14, choose a playlist and hit Shuffle, it will play 1 song, maybe 2, but then just stop in the middle of the second song. When I look at the Music app, I can see that it says “Loading…” where the title of the song normally is at the bottom of the screen. After a few second, it shows the song that was playing and I can hit play again. It will then start playing that song from the beginning. Then it will stop after another song or two.

I’m usually at home playing on a Bluetooth speaker (JBL Go) and my phone is connected to the Wi-Fi. Although it seems like I shouldn’t need Wi-Fi to play local songs. But it also stops playing even when I’m not using an external speaker.

I have tried several things. Turning phone on/off, deleting the Music app and reinstalling it and reloading all the music (took a long time), resetting the network connection, making sure the wi-fi is up and strong, and making sure there are no iOS updates.

Any suggestions?

Okay, here is some more information after I’ve done further testing.

I noticed that some of my playlists shuffled fine and others did not, so I tired figuring out the differences.

My main playlist has 5,000 songs. It’s a Smart Playlist with 2 rules. One is that a certain word must appear in the Comments field and the other is Last Played is not in the last 12 months. When I try to Shuffle this playlist, it says “Loading…” for a few second, then it plays the first song. When the second song starts playing, the Music interface freezes after 4 or 5 seconds — the song timer stops and none of the buttons work. However, the song continues to play for another 30 seconds or so. Then the Music app crashes and closes.

I have another playlist that is the same except it doesn’t have the Last Played rule. It has 17,000 songs. When I shuffle that one, it works fine.

So I edited the second playlist and added the Last Played rule. When I updated it onto my iPhone and shuffled it, it had the same crashing behavior as the first playlist.

However, I have another playlist that had a rule of Last Played is not in the last 3 months (with some other Comments-related rules), but that one does Shuffle fine. Although, it only has 600 songs.

So I don’t know if it’s the combo of using a Last Played rule on a large playlist?

Anyway, might be a bug. It would be interesting if someone could try to recreate this. If you have a large playlist and try to add a “Last Played is not in the last 12 months” rule, and then try to shuffle it on an iPhone 14, I’d be interested to know if it’s just my phone or not.
