move a file from A to B

Problem: I want to move a file from A to B. The simplest task on the planet, right? But what I don't want is to copy the file in A, navigate to B and paste it there, leaving the original file still at A. That is not moving a file from A to B, that is copying a file from A to B, leaving me with duplicates of the file at both A and B. In that case I'd have to then navigate back to A to delete the file to complete the task.

What is the solution to this problem on MacBook Pro Ventura?

If you're dragging the file on the same volume, don't press any modifier keys.

If you're dragging the file between volumes, press the Command key.

If you're moving the file through the clipboard, press the Option key when pasting.

See if there is anything here—

Organize files in folders on Mac - Apple Support

To trouble shoot further you can:

—Test issue in another user (or guest user) account Change Users & Groups settings on Mac - Apple Support

This will tell you if it a universal issue or isolated to your user/admin account.

—A SafeBoot How to use safe mode on your Mac - Apple Support will sort many anomalies

Login and test. Reboot as normal and test. .

This test will tell you if third party interference; most* extensions etc are not loaded in safe boot mode.
