I have hundreds of copies of the same contacts. Some are even empty. They will not merge or remain deleted. Why?

My contacts have hundreds of copies of several contacts and contact lists/groups. Every time I try to merge them something creates more again. I have a very simple email etc setup with 2 gmail accounts and an iCloud email. Please don’t say it’s bc contacts are stored in iCloud and not on devices like Android. I’ve seen that non answer here several times. Anyone know what the bug actually is?

iPhone XR, iOS 16

I guess you are referring to Duplicate Contacts.

You may have stored the same contacts in multiple email accounts.

Either remove the contacts from the rarely used email account or disable contacts from the rarely used mail account in the iOS Mail app.

Unlike some Android devices, contacts are neither stored locally on an iPhone nor in SIM. They are synced to an email account that you had Google, iCloud, AOL, Exchange, Outlook, Yahoo or any Other
