I have a Macbook Pro M2 and the last update within Ventura seems to cause issues

It's a MacBook Pro 13" M2 2022, with 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD. It was updated to Ventura 13.3 (22E252) a couple of days ago.

I have noticed two main differences:

  • some pdf documents that I used to double click would open Preview and be displayed. Now Preview opens but does not display anything. If from Preview I use the "open" item from the file menu to load the same file, I works
  • I use another monitor that I usually use as my main screen. When using the screen saver, only the macbook screen displays the screen saver, not the external screen. This only seems to happen with I use photo-related screen savers, others display fine on both screens. I have used all combinations of main screen / extended screen, but the same problem remains. Right after reboot, the screen saver works on both, the second time only the MacBook displays it.

I would appreciate it if you could help, this is no vital but I enjoy seeing our family photos on the main screen when the computer is not used.

Thanks.

Hello leGibe,

We're happy to work together on the issues you stated with your MacBook Pro. We have some questions to help clarify the issues, then we'll provide a few steps to troubleshoot the possible underlying cause further.

Relating to .pdf files opening blank in Preview:

  • Do all .pdf files open blank in Preview?
  • If only some open blank, is there a pattern (from a particular source)?
  • Are those files stored on your MacBook Pro hard drive, or are you opening them from another document source (email, cloud files service, external drive, etc.)?
  • Once you open them using the File command, are you then able to double-click open them in Preview?
  • Are you using a VPN or Personal Hotspot?

For the external monitor not displaying a specific screen saver:

  • What is the source of the photos when choosing that screen saver?
  • Did it work before any recent change to your MacBook Pro, like a macOS update?

Let's work through these steps to start ruling out what's causing these issues. First, we'd like you to boot to safe mode and test both issues. That will identify if it's something related to a login item.

Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support

Then we'd like you to create a test user profile on your Mac, log in to it and test for both issues. This will identify if there is something within your user profile causing the problem.

We look forward to hearing back from you.

Take care.

Hello Soosie_J215,

  • Do all .pdf files open blank in Preview?
    • No, apparently only files with accents in the titles, and only some of them
  • If only some open blank, is there a pattern (from a particular source)?
    • I have tried from the Desktop, the Download and the Home folders. It seems that they are attachments that I download from gmail. The file(s) Numériser 5.jpeg or Notice d'information générale nationalité.pdf once downloaded open blank. If I edit the title by adding a space and deleting it, it then opens normally in Preview. I know 100% that I could the second file opened fine in Preview after download before the upgrade.
  • Are those files stored on your MacBook Pro hard drive, or are you opening them from another document source (email, cloud files service, external drive, etc.)?
    • hard drive
  • Once you open them using the File command, are you then able to double-click open them in Preview?
    • No
  • Are you using a VPN or Personal Hotspot?
    • No

I will now try the rest and answer.

Thanks judysings, but I am questioning the change of behaviour from Ventura 13.3. I never needed to do that before, why should I start?

Also there is the screen saver issue.

I have reported both as bugs to Apple hoping to have a response. I can live with this, but I am 100% sure that neither issues happened with Ventura 13.2.?
