You don't. You must manually save a document once to enable autosave. I recommend in the future that you do this as soon as you have opened Pages with a new template and before you type anything.

If you don't do this, then quitting Pages performs self cleanup and all content related to the unsaved document is removed. It won't be on a Time Machine backup either.
