I wanted to start my old macbook air again. When I turn it on, it shows the apple logo and starts loading. At like 3/4th of the loading process, it just stops and does mot turn on. I waited for hours. Is there anything I can do or is the macbook plain and simple too old? Thanks a lot in advance.
Try booting into Safe Mode. This will take longer to boot as it is running a file system check and also will delete some temp & cache files which can cause booting issues. It also prevents third party software from launching automatically during boot & login.

An option is to create a bootable usb stick and try to reinstall macOS. A step by step you can find her: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support but this way you will lost your data. :(
