to clarify, my work MacBook and my personal MacBook link to the same Apple ID. I need to change this?

If you have both computers updated or upgraded from their factory-issued MacOS, you will need to choose ONE, go through the motions of preparing for sale, install the factory-original software that is tagged with serial number ONLY (rather than Apple-ID.)
Then enter the new Apple-ID, and upgrade to the version of MacOS you wish to use on a daily basis.
