What is used to determine location? Apple ID or Device? If I send some a text from an iPhone to share my location, is it basing the location off my Apple ID or the actual device location?

If I want to have someone’s location from their phone number how would I do that without getting the location of the iPad that also has service? my boyfriend was sharing his location with me for a while now. Today I wanted to add his iPad to my location tracking since he has a habit of leaving it around. When trying to connect I accidentally deleted his location from iPhone and got the iPad location. See shared location across all devices but not my phone When my wife shares her location with me it shows across all my devices (multiple ipads) but not on my phone, anyone know what’s going on? She can send me her location in a text but it doesn’t show in my phone’s thread. However it will show in my other device’s threads, and by going to those devices into my messages I can see the active location being shared. Nothing from my phone though.

Your Apple ID is just an identifier of the user (You). Your device provides the location for your Apple ID. In short, your location is shared by your device’s location.
