What is used to determine location? Apple ID or Device? If I send some a text from an iPhone to share my location, is it basing the location off my Apple ID or the actual device location?

Your Apple ID is just an identifier of the user (You). Your device provides the location for your Apple ID. In short, your location is shared by your device’s location.
