Occasionally a notification gets deleted before I have a chance to take the action I need. Is there any way to retrieve it? MacBook Pro with latest OS X, iPad and iPhone with latest IOS.

Click the time on the menu bar and a dashboard will open up. The notifications are on top and can be expanded by clicking one of them.
Thank U but not exactly what I am asking. Sorry I was not clear. I do what you say and the notifications appear. I see an important notification, but later it has disappeared before I could take action.
