Vo2 max calculation way off

Apple Watch / Apple Fitness vo2 max calculation is way off. Ie it’s much worse than reality - for me at least. I have an unusually high max heart rate for my age and I’m wondering if this is the reason. Apple fitness doesn’t seem to know my max heart rate (though I don’t know why since my watch is measuring heart rate). Vo2 max calculations can use max heart rate and so if apple fitness is using an estimated max heart rate based on my age then this would lead to this error. If that’s the reason (and it may not be) then all they need to do is capture max heart rate as well as resting heart rate and provide a personalised vo2 max calculation. Apple what do you think?

For what it is worth, there is a big change in my readings over last several months...dropping from 56 to 38...with absolutely no change in my workouts or intensity. It started around October. No idea why.

If you can’t find any VO2 max readings in the Health app, that is probably because you have not yet logged the right kind of workouts with your watch. Only two workout types can produce an estimated VO2 max on Apple WatchOutdoor Walk and Outdoor Run. (However, I believe Hiking also works.)

VO2 max relates to maximal exertion. So you’ll need to log a pretty intensive workout to generate a reading. And you’ll need to sustain it for at least 20 minutes.
